Broken nose gear torque tube. One of the four bonded torque tube joints that support the weight of the nose gear. This one is the inboard LH side and has the tale-tale gray powder on the bond fillet indicating the bond joint is moving and the only thing keeping it from collapsing is the bolt. If this condition is allowed to remain, the torsion bar (tube) will split at the bolt and fail, collapsing the nose gear. Part of a routine inspection should be to at least rub a finger or rag around each bond joint, if a gray residue is present, then the joint has failed and the torque tube has to be replaced. This part is the same on all of the single engine Grummans from 1969 to 2005.
